Legacy Operator Membrane Touch Switch Replacement

 Program4 Engineering, Inc. recently converted an aging, hardwired, Maris Power & Communications System membrane touch switch Operator Console to a desktop based SCADA system in a New Jersey County jail. The MTS was replaced with a Rockwell® RSView ME® PC Based SCADA system viewed with a generous 20” LCD monitor.

As part of the conversion, we developed a small library of animated icons, maintained user continuity by retaining the existing floor plans as shown on the original panel, all with minimal adjustment to the functional code and the PLC. The PLC controls the doors, intercom and PA system in the facility. This efficient upgrade gave the facility a new life span of lockup control & oversight and a system with the ability to grow.

These legacy membrane panels were installed in many correctional facilities and widely used in building security systems. Membrane panels have a flexible plastic cover mounted over fixed position hardwired switches, often with small hardwired lights providing feedback. Many are over 10 years old, aging and currently unsupportable. The drive PLCs are hardy workers with a long life span.
